What Power supply should I buy for my HP MediaCenter desktop that was surged?
During a power outage, my new HP desktop was surged and the power supply needs to be replaced. Its sitting in Circuit City and I need to buy a new part to replace the supply, but I have no idea how much to pay for it, or how many watts I need. My Desktop is the HP MediaCenter M1000. How much should I pay? How many watts do I need? Any suggestions? Thanks, Ben.

- I would get 450 or better watts - probably 480 or 550 theres some good deals at geeks http://www.geeks.com/products_sc.asp?cat=703 get an atx+4 connector - not sure which connector you need the 20+4 works on both i dont like genmax and a-power - go with one of the others there's a huge price range at geeks - remember, you get what you pay for. Most of the HP's will take a generic - as long as the size is standard you SHOULD be ok
- First off do you know if the hp desktop take generic power-supply? cause a lot the branded names has a custom case that won't allow you to add a generic power-supply. It's the fitting that i'll be more concern off not the actual connections. If so get 460watt and higher would be great. You can get either a enermax, or thermaltake those are two good brands for power-supply. hope that helps.
- Check your motherboards power header first, most modern motherboards have a 24 pin, some older ones have a 20 pin, and some have a 20+4 pin. Make sure you get the right power connection for your particular motherboard. I would get at least a 400 watt, that will support 2 hard drives, 2 dvd burners, and various usb devices without any issues.
