How can i get a higher resolution y on my laptop?

I recently bought a HP Compaq NX9005 Laptop at a boot sale all works fine, except that my screen has really bad graphics, and it wont go any higher. Why wont my resolution arrow move up from low to high? I have 640X480 but it wont move, i have 12 bit but I cant get 32 bit! The screen is a 8 inch. How can i get a higher resolution?
