Testing power supply for HP slimline. Is it the board or supply?

I am trying to test a power supply for an HP slimline. I dont have a tester but I can tell you this. When I plug the power supply up all alone the little green light on it turns on. As soon as I plug it into the motherboard, the light turns off and the unit wont power on. Any ideas? Thanks!
