What is the average life span of a laptop computer from HP?

I have owned a laptop computer from HP for about 3 years now and I am thinking about buying a newone. The thing is, for the past year or so, it has given me nothing but problems and since I am going to enter college soon, it would be nice to start fresh. I could just buy a new battery + adapter cord and such, but by the time I shell out about 300 for that, I could just go ahead and by the new computer since I will probably wind up getting one in a few years anyway. What should I do?

1. I usually run my HP laptops for over 5 years. Yes they usually need a battery but the power supply works fine. In fact my last one is still in use as a spare system on our wireless network (it's a y2k model omnibook). Since it took such a beating I bought another HP for the business. So for me average usage has been 6 years. Yeah I know not exactly current tech by the time I get a new one but for what I use it for I don't need the latest greatest thing just something that can run the progs i have.
2. I have one that is 6 years old and running 24 hours a day 365 hours a year. The only time it is off is when there is a power outage. Yes it's been repaired a few times also . The choice is yours to make, I made mine to keep because I repair my own computers and everyone else's. Sometimes you can buy from ebay at a very low cost. It's easy to check out the seller for reputation etc... Unless you have lots of cash, try and fix it. Replacing with second hand parts can sometimes be the best way to go to save money. After you graduated and landed a good paying job get a better laptop.
