Is it true you can not upgrade HP laptops... or is it just laptops in general?

I am getting a laptop tomorrow. I dont know a lot about it. I have a choice between an Toshiba Satellite A205-S4707 and an HP Pavillion ( dont know what model). I am purchasing this through a retailer who is selling it to my husband at cost and has offered up these two kinds. I am a casual gamer. Which one would you recommend? I am somewhat computer literate and I know how to upgrade a desktop unit, but someone once told me that you can not upgrade an HP once it leaves the factory. Is this true? I am leaning towards the HP... but I am afraid if it does not completely suit my needs I will not be able to upgrade it so it does (i.e. more ram). I dont know what model of HP Pavillion, but I know this guy had the Toshiba one before it was even released on the market... so I hope it is a good one. Which would you choose? And can you upgrade an HP or a Toshiba after purchase? ONE MORE QUESTION.... I have noticed that some of the HP pavillions have fingerprint scanners. What is the finger print scanner for. Does it lock your computer unless your fingerprint matches?

  1. Most parts are made to fit in that laptop. In general the Hard Drive and RAM is the most you can change youself. Fitting a DVD can be done but best left to a expert, So in short your stuck wiith what you buy with a laptop http://thehowtoguides.co.uk/
  2. If in doubt get the model (no Offense don't buy something if you don't know what it it unless you trust your husband)number you will be getting. Then go to hp.com look it up and check out the upgrades that can be done to it. I own 2 HPs one lap and one desk both are upgradeable. Also is the Toshiba competitive with this price:http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11222000&whse=BC&topnav=&browse=&lang=en-US please e-mail and let me know
