Why does my printer (Epson Photo R380) stop printing black when it is only out of color ink?

1. Epson has built a safety feature into the printers that protects the printhead from damage. If one color is out, it will stop printing until you replace that color. Why? Just in case what you need to print has that color on the page. Forcing a large air bubble through the head would destroy it.
