Why do HP laptops come with the hard drive partitioned into two parts?

I have heard many answers, im looking to find the majority.

  1. To save your OS back up
  2. The reason they have the extra partition is so that they don't have to give you a restore disk. Instead of having a seperate disk the second partition typically keeps all of the restore data. It saves on packaging and doesn't hurt anyone but the user.
  3. ...wouldn't you be looking to find the correct answer, not the majority? If it's got vista on it it's to help you recover your OS if you need to reformat. Stinks because it means you can't put a lower OS on it.
