I am in the market and considering among Sony, Nikon, Canon and Casio. Which one is most compact and takes good pictures?

1. look at the write-ups in Amazon. They may be not be scientically accurate but will give you a good directional answer. Don't overthink this. Most cameras take reasonably good pictures..
