  1. with some restrictions, Nikon DSLRs can use any F mount lens. the D1H, D1X,D2H, D2X and D200 are required to use the in camera meter for non-CPU lenses. the D40 and D40x will not focus with AF lenses. they require AF-I or AF-S lenses to autofocus.
  2. Nikon has an amazing history of backwards compatibility in it's lenses and bodies. Here's an article to help you. http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/compatibility.htm And a great chart. http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/compatibility-lens.htm Long answer, short - unless you have a D40 or D40x, any AF Nikon lens will work perfectly. On a D40 or D40x, you can use them, but with manual focus. AI or older lenses have very limited compatibility, except with the top-of-the-line Nikon DSLRs. I hope this is helpful.
  3. You will be able to get SOME functionality (possibly losing autofocus or light metering capability depending on the exact lens type) off of every Nikon F-mount lens made since 1977 on all the current digital models. Pre-Ai lenses (basically pre-1977-vintage lenses) and old fisheyes can damage modern Nikon cameras if you try and mount them, however most pre-Ai lenses can be converted by a machine shop to mount safely. The D40/D40x is said to permit use of pre-Ai lenses (the only Nikon digital to do so), however Nikon doesn't recommend it and still gives the standard "may damage the camera body" disclaimer on their compatability lists.
