Would like ideas on problem with zoom feature on Sony Digital camera.?

Without prior problems, my Sony camera when powered up immediately goes to the 12X zoom. It will only go down to the 6.2X zoom so I can not take closeups. In other words, it can not be brought down to the 1X zone. Anybody else had this problem or have any suggestions? It has worked beautifully up to this time, and I'm on vacation with a malfunctioning camera and not a happy camper.
