camera tricks/light paintings on digital cameras - sony cybershot n2?

I just got this new 10MP Cybershot N2 digital camera and I want to make full use of it. I'm a very novice photographer and I'd like to know how they do those cool camera tricks, specifically light paintings. Or any other camera trick you can share! A little help would do me good. I have an event to cover in 2 weeks and I'd appreciate all the help you can give me :)

  1. The best way to understand how to use your camera is to fiddle around with it. Take pics under each setting, indoor, fireworks, B&W, etc. then once you know what each setting is like try taking pics in perspective, recognize the flow of the subject. Pay attention to color, shape and texture and all those terms. Moreover just try new things with it, if you don't like it delete it.
  2. Light painting: Place a subjec in a completely dark room. Set the ccamera on manual with a long shutter speed, then take a flash light or of camera flash and shine it only on the parts of the image that you want to have show up on the image. To avoid hotspots, do not shine the light source on one spot too long. There are not a lot of tricks persay...more techniques to get different results. You'd have to be more specific in what you want to do for me to be of any further help.
