With digital cameras, what settings besides shutter speed should I work with the get the best baseball shots?

I'm heading to Spring Training in a week and want to know what settings I should have my digital camera at to get the best action shots. Things like ISO, apature, etc.

  1. If your camera is a point-and-shoot, try the "sport" mode to see if it gives you good shots. Usually these modes are preset by people who know a lot about their cameras.
  2. When you adjust one variable yourself (like shutter speed), most cameras will automatically adjust the other parameters automatically to give the best exposure for every metered situation. A properly exposed fast shutter will help you control blur, but it might cause you some graininess if the camera has to crank the ISO too high. If these are daylight shots, adjusting the shutter might be all you need to do. The real trick is capturing an image at the precise moment you want to. Anything but a digital SLR can have quite a bit of shutter lag, so see if your camera has a "burst" mode. You just hold down the trigger, and your camera fires away, hopefully catching one good shot. I wouldn't adjust the aperture unless you're trying to manipulate the depth of field.
