Which Canon digital camera should I get?

I want something better than a point & shoot but don't want to haul around a bunch of accessories for a SLR. What is the best Canon camera right under the SLR category? I need good zoom, good low light & night shots, and action shots. Out of Canon s5 is and Canon Powershot G9...which is better in action, low light, and night shots? The G9 has a bigger sensor but the s5 is has twice the zoom and the flash seems to be better. Which of these factors is more important for taking great pictures in all situations?

  1. in my opinion s5 is would be the best one,it is slr like but so simpler than a real slr,10mp,28-240mm zoon,0 cm macro, and so..... also a series would be a good choice
  2. If the S5-IS is also too big for you to mess with, consider my new favorite small camera - the Canon Powershot SD950-IS. I would say that it does very well with the low light, night and action shots. If you use digital zoom, it does pretty well also. I NEVER would have said this before using this camera, but the digital zoom is not horrible on the SD950-IS. See http://www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinstein/tags/sd950is/ for some samples. See http://www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinstein/2182289883/ for a very impressive SD950-IS digital zoom sample. This may not be legitimate, but see also http://www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinstein/tags/sd900/ for some SD900 samples. These are from my previous camera. I just upgraded to the SD950-IS and I would say that anything the SD900 can do, the SD950-IS can do better, so you can look at some of the low light samples and assume that the SD950-IS can do as well or better.
  3. powershot sx100 and powershot A650, but you'll probably have enough on the cheaper A570 IS which i recently bought. Very good quality
  4. DSLR is very costly especially if you wanted good zoom, fast lens and camera itself, probably will cost you over $2000 for the camera EOS 40D, Several lens. If you don't go the $ stick with the S5, good zoom 12x and lots of feature and good camera meet most of your requirement except night shot. If you willing to spend about 1000, get rebel xti kit and a zoom lens.
  5. Powershot G9 http://www.dpreview.com/news/0708/07082005canong9.asp
  6. Canon Digital Rebel XTi 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens (Black) is good and easy to use. http://www.amazon.com/Canon-Digital-10-1MP-18-55mm-3-5-5-6/dp/B000I1ZWRC/?tag=edailyshop-20&link_code=ur2&creative=9325&camp=211189
  7. I believe it is Canon's S5 model which looks just a DSLR (Canon's XT) without a lens change.
  8. I think G9 is better than S5 IS. G9 has a bigger sensor.
  9. A SLR camera doesn't have to be expensive, nor does it mean heavy with a lot of lenses and accessories to carry around. Canon, Nikon and many other manufacturers offer entry level SLR's that can function much like a point and shoot, or an SLR, depending on how you want to use them. The Rebel XTi, mentioned above is one such camera. You can read about a few more here: http://ezinearticles.com/?Simply-The-Best-Digital-SLR-Camera---Period&id=944233
