How to plug my laptop into my TV ?

I have a HP pavilion laptop. I have all the accessories I need to plug it into my TV. I click on Fn+f4 (twice, dunno why) and the screens switch but I just have the sound, it doesn't display the image. I tried with a video from abc.com for example and then with a DVD but it didn't work either. What should I do ? Somewhere I read to click on Fn+f7 but it doesn't change anything for me, I think f7 and f8 are for the screen light, aren't they ? Thanks for your help.
