HP desktop New power supply, turn power on and a couple seconds later, the computer turns off.?
I have a HP Pavillion a430n w/ a 250w power supply. the power supply died on me so I decided to buy another one. I bought an off brand 400 w power supply that fit perfectly. I plugged it in and the computer would turn on, then a few seconds later, make a click in either the power supply (i think) or somewhere else and turn off. The power button on the HP would blink blue until I held the power button (like it went ito sleep mode). Could this be because I got a bigger power supply and it just isnt taking? could there be different wire settings and it is shutting off to prevent from blowing the motherboard? HELP!!!!! I checked the wires, they were all good, i checked the wires, they are different colors, i have a HP, not a dell. The power supply i bought is a atx12v ver 2.0 from zumax x1 series i checked the old power supply and it says atx-250-12z rev D, i do not see a 2.0 anywhere could it be because i have the case open? is there like a latch that needs to be pushed in to let the cpu think its closed? it seems like the fan in the power supply will start to accelerate after like 3 secs and once it reaches a peak or something, it will just turn off

- The first question is why did the original one die? If it was due to a power surge (you do use a surge suppressor I hope) then your mobo could be damaged. From what you described the power supply is clicking and shutting down. There could be a short in the system or it could be a bad power supply. A larger power supply just by the fact of it being larger, would not cause that problem. Then again, improper cabling (as in being slightly loose) may also be an issue. Recheck the cabling as well.
- It could be a few things(namely not the power supply), but the first thing I would check is if your old power supply fit the ATX standards. Dell is known for having some models with power supplies that are dell specific. Examine your old power supply and make sure that the color of wire in each pin is the same as the new power supply on the main connector going to the mother board. PS no too big of a power supply is not the problem Also make sure that your power supply (if the dell power supply is a normal ATX power supply) is 2.0 or greater, it should tell you on the new power supply's manual what version it is. UPDATE: "i checked the wires, they are different colors,"---then you need to order a HP specific power supply from HP(not heard that HP has made specific power supplies but if they are not the same color they are not the same voltage as they color code the wires by what it does/voltage) Also its not because the case is open
- More than likely there is something that the motherboard does not like about the power supply. I'm guessing an incorrect voltage or some connector isn't hooked up properly. In general, you don't have to worry about a power supply having too much wattage....the computer just draws what power it needs. It's actually better to have more watts in the power supply than the computer is likely to draw. On the other hand, maybe it's the power supply that isn't liking the motherboard. Maybe something is shorted out on the motherboard and that's what caused the first power supply to suddenly die. The first thing I'd do is verify that the new power supply works. About the only way to do this is to attach it to a known working computer. After you confirm the new power supply is good, check all your wiring. Just keeping moving forward in a logical progression until you find the faulty part.
- It's because the pc enters in protect mode. The power of the source doesn't matter: the pc will use only how much it needs but bigger is always better. Your problem comes most probably from an incorrect use:plugs not full inserted (or at all) or wrongly inserted, other wires have been moved by accident.
- check for a pinched wire. I know on my dell when I replaced the power supply. it did this and couldnt figure out why. then I saw the wire I pinched. it would run open but when I closed the case it would ground out the wire and shut the computer down.
