HP Compaq Power Supply Question?

Yesterday my HP Compaq D530 computer turned off after I put in an external harddrive. Now it wont start. So it looks like the power supply. I put in another one to test it to see if that what it was, and the motherboard light lights up (it flickers if the old power supply is on). But again the computer won't start up once I try to turn it on. Could I be missing some plug, and that is why it is not starting up? (I know there are two on the motherboard, and others for the cd drives, hard drives etc.) Also when I was testing it I used a 24 pin for the 20 pin in the motherboard. If it is not the powersupply could it be something else? ANy help would be greatful!

  1. You need to have a powersupply that provides the correct amount of voltage to your motherboard and enough power to juice up all your components. You can't just pick one out of the stack and shove it in your system. By putting on a powersupply not correctly matched to your motherboard, you may have fried it. Yes, you could be missing the secondary power plug (I haven't looked at your particular computer's system requirements yet). If I get some time later today, I'll let you know what you need specifically.
  2. Well, if your motherboard is a 20 pin, make sure you're sticking in a 20 pin. I don't even know if you can put a 24 on a 20, it should be able to separate or have some adapter or something. Did you plug in the additional 4-pin power connector that plugs in near the processor? It's a square with 4 holes. Don't know if yours would have that or not though, since it only has 20 pins in the main one to begin with. Other than that, as long as your hard drive was connected it should at least try to boot. If it isn't booting at all and your PSU is hooked up correctly, it's possible that a piece of hardware has fried or isn't seated in its slot properly. Or that your HDD itself is dead. Try to get it to boot before jumping to any conclusions though. Look for any connectors on your motherboard that haven't been connected to your PSU.
