What power supply can i get for my hp computer so it will work with a 8800gt graphics card?

I have a hp pavilion a6109n and i was seeing what psu would work with a 8800gt graphics card. I asked hp what to get and they said i can get any normal atx power supply with 460w or less no more. Is this true?

  2. yep 500 / 520 W ATX supply should be plenty enough
  3. That should do it, depending on what all you have in your pc. But the statement about no more is just silly. You could put a 1200watt psu in it with no troubles at all. It would be a waste of money, but would work just fine. There is no high side to psu's. They will only provide the power demanded. The problem is with too little power, as in an undersized psu. Just make sure the psu you get has the right connectors for sata hdd's, if equipped, and for the graphics card. Any old atx psu may not have the correct cables, and yet another return and hold for the one you should have gotten.....
  4. heres a really good atx psu, 500 watt rosewill for 25.00 after mir.......i might buy it myself just for the he77 of it.......if i build one for someone this is plenty good enough to use........plus ive used them w/no probs in the past....... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182076 scott
  5. i have an HP PAVILION DY4890Y that came with 350w. I installed new 500w psu and an 8800 gt oc. It worked fine for the first week but then the whole computer became slower. Other yahoo answerer's told me that my power supply may not be enough. So long story short i have know freaking idea, too many conflicting answers. I have not taken the time to use the watt calculator. you need to know watts of everything to calculate. i have seen a few of them on the net.I would not trust HP to answer that question for you. i was talking to them the other day and just hung up on em because its some dude flipping through a manual not a knowledgeable tech.
