i have an HP laptop computer, what are the side-effects if i kepp it on standby for a long time?

long time meaning a whole day or from night to morning

1. If it's plugged in, it will just be waiting in power save mode. It will be back up in a second. No harm occurs. I've done this with multiple laptops for years without problem. On =ly issue is if there aren't plugged in. If they are on battery, check your power settings to ensure a power off, or hibernate, if the batteries go low.
2. by stand by i guess you don't mean hibernate i once left my hp omnibook in stand by for a week (not on mains power) with the wifi card plugged in and it killed the li-on battery (if you totally drain them they sulk!!!) 24 hours is ok though if on mains then there is no practical time limit
