Samsung Tv as computer monitor for Hp Laptop?

I wish to connect my HP laptop to my Samsung flat screen TV to enable me to watch downloaded TV via BBC iplayer. I have used a male to male VGA cable to connect the tv to the laptop but all I can seem to get is the background picture of my laptop showing on my TV. I was hoping to simply plug the two togther and hey presto but this does not seem to be the case. Any ideas would be very gratefully received. Thankyou.

1. It is running as a secondary display. Try to move the mouse cursor to the right side of the screen. It should show up on the tv. You can turn this feature off in the display settings.
