Help upgrading ram in an HP laptop computer?
I want to upgrade my ram to 4gb. The HP website tells me the computer can hold 2gb max. The HP computer health installed in my computer tell me the computer can hold up to 4gb max. When I installed 4gb the bios of the computer shows 2560mb of ram and windows system info shows 4gb installed but will only use upto 2560mb. Is this bad for the computer? Is there a way I can use all 4gb of ram?

- most laptops dont support 4gb of ram, even if they did, you need a 64 bit operating system, you are wasting your ram basically
- No because your motherboard does not support 4GB of ram, and you'd need a 64 bit operating system to even make use of it. Most laptops i've seen can only support 2GB max, with desktops supporting a max of 4GB. It's not "bad" just a total waste of cash.
- If your laptop only came with 1 gb of ram then your probably only suppost to upgrade to 2 gb of ram. Not sure if that would be bad for the computer though putting too much ram in.
- Hi. This is an OS and motherboard issue. I would recommend 2GB in dual mode. If the memory is modern (DDR3 or better) hang onto the sticks for when you get a machine that supports it, or sell the RAM you cannot use.
- theses guys are speakin bull you may use 4gbs only if you have a motherboard or bios update most laptops easy support 4gbs but windows will only see like 3.5 gbs unless you spend money on windows 64 bit but thats pointless
- As mentioned, the only way you'll use 4GB is with a 64bit OS. However, it won't "destroy" your computer to have more memory in it. On some systems, I have seen instability associated with RAM but only on much older systems. There are a couple of hacks to force Windows to see more (Do a search on RAM and photoshop), but if CMOS is only recognizing that much...You're in essence, capped.
