Installing Windows XP on a new HP laptop which comes with Vista?
Im planning to purchase the new HP DV6000 series notebook. However, the laptops only come with Windows Vista as an O/S which i do not want. It is possible for me to use my friend's hp laptop boot cd (which has windows xp) to install windows xp on to my new laptop?

- That would be pirating go buy a xp oem version that the legal way and you can install xp just boot to cd delete the old partition
- Whether you use a licensed copy or not, you are probably going to have to start by formatting the drive. Most Windows OS will not let you install a previous version. I recommend installing XP as a "dual-boot" option. That way you won't have to go through the whole install process again when you want to move to Vista.
- No. The boot CD from your friend's laptop most likely has an OEM version of Windows XP on it. That means it's only licensed to be used on the machine that it came with. One way to tell is to look at the CD. If it says anything like "for distribution only with a new PC," then it's definitely an OEM version. Whether it's OEM or not, using your friend's CD to install XP on your laptop would be pirating. Don't go there! If you want to install XP on your new laptop that came with Vista, you're going to have to bite the bullet and shell out for a new retail copy of XP.
- No not really, well it all depends is your friends laptop the same make and model as yours, and even that might not work for the simple fact that the hardware one you laptop (nic card, video card, soundcard, ect,.) might be from a different manufacter. what i would suggest, go to hp.com in the support section you can download all the drivers that you laptop needs to function, download what you need (video drivers, sound and nic) and burn them to a CD your friends copy of win XP will install and if it ask you for a CD key it should be on the bottom their laptop, when the installation is done install all the drivers from the CD that you've burned and your good to go
- It can't. The CD or DVD will not functioning by default. The manufacturer usually includes program to identify if that machine used to recover or install the OS...is the correct target. The exception will be the case where Windows XP is shifted to your friend without modification, and in order to make his laptop works on best performance, another automated CD (shifted to your friend too) from manufacturer must be used. However the above-mentioned case is very rare to be found. At Malaysia HP has stopped above options to its valued customers. Note that too, manufacturer will adjust the OS installation procedures in order to install correct hardware device drivers before OS setup is finished. In this situation Windows XP will stop working and crash as incorrect device drivers are loaded. You can contact HP to change your options upon purchasing your new laptop, they should have such customization for customer in your country. BEST REGARDS, Jack
- The only way to put XP on a Vista machine is by formatting the hard drive and installing a full verison of XP. XP cannot go on a the second dual boot b/c the newer verison has to be loaded last. Your friends CD will most likely not work b/c it will look for hardware that may not be installed on your computer.
- everyone has offered some valid points as well as invalid. im going to rant for a second.. so skip this section if you just want the how to. ... you can dual boot xp and vista, having vista on the second partition. you cant use the oem disk, with out a serious hack (and an os lacking the appropriate drivers). anyway. i have a dv6000 series laptop as well. i have a quad boot system. xp, vista, os x, and gentoo linux. (yes it is possible to use osx on non mac hardware) why both windows versions? music production software wont run on vista... i just keep vista arround to show everyone why it is horrid crap. ill be as blunt as possible, use google to help you if you have issues or dont understand something. obtain a linux live image and burn it in raw format.. boot it, resize the vista partion. create partitions for what ever oses your going to be using, and create the appropriate file systems . install grub on the master boot record. install whatever os on the appropriate partition. cake. one problem.... hp wont give you drivers for your sound card or wifi card or Ethernet controller. ... at least ive had no luck.....so...whynot give linux a try if your going to repartition anyway?>
