why is my new hp pavilion dv2000 laptop making noise?

I just recently bought my hp pavilion laptop last Thursday and its been making this fan noise since yesterday. The noise is on all the time except for this morning when i first turned it on when i woke up. But after about 15 minutes it started again and its been making the noise ever since. Is there a way to stop the noise and is this harmful to my computer
