How do I optimize my new LapTop HP pavilion tx1000)?

I just opened it up tonight - went to delete all the crap that came with it - for some reason most of them weren't listed under add/delete programs. I did my best, not sure if they are gone. What else should I do with the new laptop to make sure it is running at peak efficiency? Thanks

  1. Get CCleaner and try to run it daily.
  2. Hi You can download PC Decrapifier, which will uninstall a lot of unnecessary programs that come on new computers. You can choose the programs that you want to uninstall. I've never tried it, but I heard it was good. It's free and you can get it from here: http://pcdecrapifier.com/home Here is a list of things PC Decapifier removes: http://pcdecrapifier.com/apps If you want free virus protection, you can download Avast: http://www.avast.com/eng/free_virus_protectio.html For free anti-spyware protection, you can download these: http://www.superantispyware.com/index.html http://www.spywareterminator.com/ http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php Here is a free firewall from Comodo, and it's very good: http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/ Here is a program that will clean your hard drive and registry: http://www.ccleaner.com/ This will also clean your registry: http://www.eusing.com/free_registry_cleaner/registry_cleaner.htm Before you make any changes to your registry, you should back it up. CCleaner and Eusing will allow you to do this. This will defragment your registry: http://www.auslogics.com/registry-defrag/index.php Some programs such as Spyware Terminator and Super Anti-Spyware will automatically start when you start your computer. You can shut them down by going to the Settings, Options, or Preferences section of the programs. If that doesn't work, you can use the msconfig function to shut them and programs down from startup. Using msconfig on Windows XP: http://www.netsquirrel.com/msconfig/msconfig_xp.html Using msconfig on Vista: http://www.netsquirrel.com/msconfig/msconfig_vista.html If you choose to shut down other programs using msconfig, research the startup or system item before you uncheck it because it may be important. You should also defrag your hard drive as well by using Disk Defragmenter. It should be located at Start -> All Programs -> Accessories ->System Tools -> Disk Defragmenter. You can also use the Disk Cleanup option in the same location as Disk Defragmenter. This is for Windows XP, but I'm not sure if the location is the same for Vista. I hope this helps you =)
