Can you add extra hard drive space to an HP Pavilion laptop?

I know most laptops are all one unit and you cannot add extra hard drive space but my HP Pavilion dv5000 seems to have a space that you can open up and add chips of memory possibly. Does anyone know this particular brand, and if this is possible. I have only 60 Gigs on my laptop, and I have a 500 Gig external but I need more space for downloading on the computer before I can transfer it to the external. Thanks I have 60 gigs about 30 goes to backup and software I need to leave on the laptop. I would like to leave at least, very very least 4 gigs of music. When I want to make a 28 gig download i cannot start to make it because I don't have that space left. The download won't go directly to the external hard drive. If I were to look at replacing my hard drive what kind of cost would I be facing? I am using Azureus as my download manager. I changed the file path to my external and for some reason it still runs through my laptop as well.

  1. External is the only way to go, if you want to add a second harddrive in a laptop. You can however, replace the laptop harddrive with a bigger laptop harddrive.
  2. you can access the hard drive but its not a add hard drive space you must remove the present one and replace it with a bigger one, then use your HP restore disks to load all the original software on to the new drive.
  3. Upgrading laptops is a very tricky concept. The new drive not only has to fit where the old one went, but you also need the power and a controller that can support it. Even if you get past those hurdles, an additional drive might then go on to tax your battery alot harder leading to other problems. Why can't you just transfer your extra data to the external?
  4. I would recommend external. I hope you are aware that when you download a file, u can specify its path and instead of having the path as to the internal harddrive, just change it to the external, so u won't have to do any transfers from internal to external. U don't add "chips" of memory unless if u have a media card slot which still would be inadequate for ur needs. You would have to replace ur harddrive inside ur laptop if u wanted more internal space. First u would need a operating system install disk, then u would need all the drivers for your notebook. Then you would swap out the 60 gb with the larger new hardrive and reinstall the operating system and drivers. Some good harddrives include the seagate momentus line, wd, and maxtor lines
