I am very confused about the Acer laptops. Help?!?

I want to buy my first laptop and found an amazing deal in circuit city for an Acer laptop. Now my father and I havent heard of the company and initially wanted an HP or such. I have searched and asked my friends and some say Acer sucks in terms of customer service while others say its amazing. I am very confused and dont want to make the wrong decision. So can anyone clarify this? Whats wrong with Acer customer service and should I pass up the deal and get an HP instead? Help please. PS the laptop in questions is the new Acer 6920 at sale at Circuit City for 700

1. Whats more important when it comes to laptops is not over spending for what you need it for. If you intend to spend 700 look into a sony vaio. More reliable parts however if you only want to view the internet spend around 400-500 instead. pcfx
2. Acer - As the man said, "You get what you paid for." Iv'e heard more negative comments about Acer than good and that is just my opinion - leave it! Best laptop is the Toshiba. Very rugged but a few dollars more and there is nothing wrong with getting an HP either.
3. I know someone who has had an Acer for about 3 yrs now. I have never used it but I do know for a fact that this person uses their Acer for music, movies, and school work. I have a Gateway that I am about to replace. I'm stuck on hp for a new notebook because you can custom build your notebook on their site at hp.com. So end up paying for exactly what you want and need. My mom uses a hp desktop at work and she is in love with it. I have heard all good reviews about hp. They are very reliable under the hood and their cases are very sturdy and don't chip. My Gateway case has a crack and a chip. Granted I may be little clumsy but I don't think a case should crack in little over a year.
