Are HP labtops generally good quality?

I'm starting college in the fall and i've been looking at small portable laptops, i've come across this HP Pavilion and i'd like to know what peoples general thoughts on HP's are as far as do they break easily and things like that This is the comp i'm looking at, it's currently on sale for $650, does this seem like a good deal? http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8846378&productCategoryId=abcat0502001&type=product&tab=1&id=1208562431197#productdetail i was maybe even thinking of just waiting until the day after thanksgiving and seeing if BB had any big sales on laptops like they usually seem to do but then i would have to go without for a few months The price is great for me, i will mostly just be using this computer to keep track of class notes and things like that, i allready have a nice desktop so i don't want to get crazy with my laptop, just something that isn't gonna break in a few months. -thanks

  1. HPs are great laptops for college students. My lil sis is in college and she has a compaq(sp?) that has lasted her for 2 years, and I know for sure that HPs are better quality than compaqs...
  2. I got an HP pavillion for my B-day about a year ago. It's a really good starter computer. It isn't the absolute BEST quality, but its not a piece of crap either. It freezes up occasionally, but has a lot of nice features.
  3. yes very good quality rank second on the top ten for notebook make by consumer report. Toshiba # one . my best advice is to buy your computer online thought a vender if you want safe money. ok deal here a better one im telling you you want to buy for a vender http://www.tigerdirect.com/ http://www.newegg.com/ my two top venders i del with them day never a problem
  4. Unfortunately, some times when you order from HP, they send you a Dell.
  5. Definitely yes, I believe that you have made a very wise choice considering all of the needs, wants, functionality and cost factors. The highest rated Laptop, a "Lenovo (IBM) ThinkPad T61 $950 Scored a 65% Rating out of a possible 100%." This falls just within the lower end of the "Very Good" Rating. The "HP Pavilion dv6700z $780 Scored a 59% Rating out of a possible 100%." This falls just outside the "Very Good" Rating but near the very top end of the "Good" Rating. Considering all factors and that this is only 6% less than the top Rated Lenovo (IBM) ThinkPad, the HP is a very good choice. *** According to Consumer Reports, the HP Pavilion is rated at 22% average "Brand repair history". Compared to the lowest number of repairs expressed as a percentage, Compaq and (IBM) Lenovo both rate at 20% (the lowest of all) average repair history. That is not a very significant difference. The only big drawback according to Consumer Reports was HP's comment that "tech support was disappointing." **** This is a non-issue with me because I have extensive knowledge and practical experince in the Computer Industry. I have owned a HP Media Center PC m7170n Model for more than a few years. I have solved every (usually S/W) problem with and through their direct, free, interactive online "Help" Self Service. I have never used their live contact personal online support, even during warranty, because I never needed it. I have great faith and brand loyalty to the HP name. I would not even think of buying any other brand. My HP PC has never needed service or repair work. When I worked in the Telecommunications industry - Manitoba Telecom Services - the majority of our test equipment was HP. The product quality, ruggedness and reliability were excellent.
