How Do I Find Problem W/ Laser Printer?

I have a Dell 1110 Laser Printer which stopped working. The pages come out extremely messed up, all black scwed all over the pages. I'd like to figure out what the exact problem is so I can replace it, fix it and have it working well again. I don't want to buy a toner not knowing if that indeed is the problem. This is my 1st laser printer so don't know too much about them.

  1. hi . your printer may be have some problem . 1. fusser Assembly has damage ed 2. laser scanner is dirty 3. paper path is dirty 4. transfer roller has not worked properly 5. cartridge is wasted but my first idea is about your cartridge ( check it )
  2. Chances are that your toner cartridge is bad. Best way to check this is to start a print, when the paper starts thru the printer, open the cover to stop the print in the middle of printing (hopefully it is part way onto the paper, if not try again), remove the toner cartridge and move the drum cover out of the way and look at the drum, there should be a partial image on part of the drum still. If you see the problem on the paper and the drum, then your problem is 98% probably the toner cartridge. But it is potentially possible something else could be wrong (high voltage problem, laser problem, etc), but not likely. If the drum image & partial print on paper is good, then your problem is most likely with the fusing assy. Make sure to carefully pull out the partially printed page. Best of luck.
  3. For a monchrome laser printer the image drum is contained in the toner cartridge. The laser scanner asembly writes an image on the photonegative drum. The paper will pass between the drum and a transfer roller and then go to the heating element in the fuser. The most common problem for image defects is the image drum which requires replacing the whole toner cartridge. Beyond that I'd recommend taking the printer some place for servicing, if you are unsure beyond replacing the toner cartridge. Depending on the age of the printer a maintenance kit might be needed.
