How soon should laser printer drum be changed?

About a week ago, I got a message displayed on my Brother laser printer, "change drum soon," so I ordered a drum on-line which just arrived. These things are expensive, so I don't want to change out the old one till necessary. I still get the message but have printed many hundreds of sheets of text since the message first appeared, and the printing looks fine. When will I know it's time to definitely change the drum, and can anything be damaged if I wait too long? Thanks.

1. My opinion is that as long as you are satisfied with the printing, don't change it. It's only something that other parts of your printer use as a .... previous sheet, so as long as you're printing looks fine, keep it. Tips: try pull it out and put it back in. the old one. see if you still get the message. if you still get it but the printing looks fine, and you want to sleep tight at night, take it to a service and ask them, but mention that you already have a replacement, or else they'll just tell you that it needs to be replace :))
