How can I make printing in EconoMode the default on my hp LaserJet 1012?

I've been through the hp LaserJet toolbox and turned EconoMode "On", but it won't stay on as a default setting. How do I get EconoMode to stay on unless I de-select it? Is this some plot by hp to make people buy toner more often?

1. go to start >> printers and faxes >> right click the printer >> go to properties >> set the printer to economode >> apply changes >> hit ok. now that is your default setting, if you do it thru a program it's just for that print job.
