What do I need to buy? Is it a big pain to try? Any guidance and professional advice is appreciated.

What category of patch cable should I use for my home network? I want to connect 2 desktops at home together and both to the internet. Wireless doesn't work very good because there are a lot of walls between the 2. So I am planning on putting the router in somewhat of a central spot and from there I'm going to wire them together for faster network speeds. 1 cable will be ~42 feet and the other ~56 feet so I will probably get a 50' and a 75' cable. One of my PC's has gigabit ethernet and the other does not. I am thinking that my network will only be as capable as my PC with the lesser ethernet(100mbps or something). Oh yeah also my router is currently still a wireless b router. Is it worth it to get Cat6? If both of my PC's had gigabit ethernet would it make a difference if my router did not have gigabit?
How do I set up a wireless home network with a desktop, laptop and printers with a wireless firewall router? We have a laptop and desktop- both used for business and personal use. We would like to have a wireless home network, with our printer, so the desktop and the laptop can connect to the same thing, with our printer. We were thinking something along the lines of two user profiles- one business and one personal- and both computers can connect to each of these profiles, and the files can be sort of 'synchronised' whenever the laptop is in range- incase it has been taken away from home for business use. We have a wireless firewall router. One of the two printers is wireless (bluetooth) and the laptop is bluetooth, if that makes any difference. The only problem is we have no real idea how to do this! Is this possible? Mail me with step by step instructions if the answer thing is not sufficient. Any thing would be a great help!

How do I create a home network in XP with no floppy and no XP disc? I need to set up a home network to link my 2 desktops and 2 laptops so that I can share files, printers etc. Here is the problem: I do not have a single A: drive that can use floppy discs. I truly believed that technology had fallen by the wayside. The wizard on XP only recognizes floppies as removable media, so, a cdr or jumpdrive will not suffice. Here is what I am working with: 2 desktops running XP Home 1 laptop running XP Home 1 laptop running Vists Prem Home I know all of my network hardware works, I have used this feature before, but I did some reformatting, and found that the ONE A: drive I have no longer works. If this is not something simple that I have just never dealt with, I will be surprised. Also, I have searched google, and read forums, and all that, so please do not post an ambiguous link. I appreciate everyone's help, but I am not helped by a link to a page that I have to read a book about. If you have a good answer on this I would really appreciate your help. I answered my own question...go to a friend's house and use their computer. Load the settings from the Network Setup Wizard on to your floppy. Leave the floppy in the A drive. Copy the "netsetup" onto a flash drive. Go home. Install "netsetup" on you computers, but change the network name. Voila! It works again!
How do keep all songs on my iPod video when I have a home network and songs are from 2 computers? I have a laptop and a pc on my home network. The pc has 75% of the mp3s that were synced and the laptop has the rest. While traveling with the laptop, I purchased new CD's and wanted to upload them to the pc to sync to the iPod video. I tried the "manually manage" setting, but iTunes still only added the new songs and deleted all the other 2500 songs that are on the pc back home. How do I add songs to the iPod without losing/deleting/unsyncing the songs that the iTunes/iPod cannot "see" if I'm not connected to my home network? Thanks one million. More details..... I can get all the songs I have onto my iPod when I'm connected to my home network (let's say that is 2,000 songs), but when I'm only connected to my laptop when I travel, I lose all the songs that are stored on my pc back home (1,500 songs) when I try to add new songs through my laptop. (Then it syncs and I only have 500 songs on my iPod.) How can I add songs to my iPod when it's only connected to the laptop and NOT lose the songs that are associated with the pc?

How do you set up to home network? I am trying to set up a home network so that I can share the internet . The "host" cpu is set up with the modem from Road Runner. On the "guest" cpu I have a router hooked up. I got it used . All the lights are on in the right places but I can't get online. Does Road Runner have something blocked or am I just doing something wrong? Thanks. (I have the same kind of router that the cable people use for Road Runner.)Maybe something is wrong as far as the host cpu is concerned? I figured it out thanks. I had to use a long ethernet cord from my Vonage router to a WIRELESS (wireless,ha) router on my guest cpu and then a short ehertnet cord from there to the guest cpu. Sounds strange but it worked. Nothing else did. I also had to set up network wizard on both cpus. It was very frustrating. I tried everything! I did it by accident! Thanks for all your great answers though.
What do I need to look for when selecting a wireless router for a home network? I recently purchased a used laptop with 802.11b wireless capability. How do I select one that will be reliable without buying way more than I will need? Thanks for any advice or recommendations.
Is there any way to make your home network act as a proxy server? I have a netgear WGR614 v6 wireless router and I was wondering if it would be possible to connect to it from another computer to use my internet connection. Basically make my home network a proxy. I would rather not have to connect to my computer to do it. I have already used remote desktop connection to basically do this, but that was rediculously slow, and a serious security risk. So is it possible and how might i do it? I just have to ask, Anthony, how could it possibly be illegal to use your home network as a proxy? It might be against some rules at school, but illegal? I only want to do this because my school just made it against the rules to access your email, no matter what you use it for. If i wanted to hide something why in the world would I want to use my home network which would be easily traceable to me?

Just wondering if anyone has any step by step directions on setting up a linksys router.
Can someone guide me through setting up a home network without paying someone to come and do it? I currently have one desktop computer, 2 laptops, a printer, and Tivo. I have cable for my ISP, and the two laptops connect to the Internet wirelessly. I would like to have all of these things on a home network, especially the Tivo. It would also be nice to print wirelessly from our laptops. Can some provide idiot-proof directions on how to do this and what I need to buy? I don't know anything about this, so I need a really simplified explanation. thanks.
