How can I combine two hard drives to form one logical partition? I just bought 2 identical 640Gb hard drives in hopes of combining them into one logical drive to store movies, music, and other network files for my home server/entertainment box. I will be reinstalling windows media center edition. Anybody know what I am going to have to do to combine the two HDDs?
What exactly does Blizzard Entertainment do when they maintain their WoW servers every week? If you play World of Warcraft you know that Blizzard shuts down all their US servers every Tuesday from 5 AM to 11 AM PST. What exactly are they doing? Is it necessary to reboot their servers and check for errors? Are they giving the system time to cool down? Are they implementing new features? The reason I ask is that I have had many home servers and they've been able to run pretty much indefinitely for weeks on end, unless something like a power failure happens. Obviously the equipment Blizzard is using is a lot more advanced and powerful, but what would happen if they didn't have maintenance every week?
What specs should I look for in a home media server? I'm looking to set up a home computer to serve music, photos, and Web video feeds to my home entertainment network. I intend to purchase a system with Windows Vista Home Premium and install TVersity Pro or PlayOn on the system. I'd like it to be able to handle these programs and to be able to serve media to my XBox 360 and possibly one or two handheld devices. In the long term, would like it to be able to handle these duties as well as occasional HD-DVR work (as technology becomes standardized) and possibly to function as a second TV on occasion. Any recommendations on specs I should look for? I currently have a three-year-old HP desktop machine with 1 gig of RAM and around 2.2 GHz of processing power. Should I just upgrade it for now?
How do I set up an old PC as a media server on my home network? I'd like to be able to keep this PC in my entertainment center and connect it to my TV to watch movies/play music without having to connect my laptop to the tv. I would like to be able to access media from the server on my laptops, as well as control the server to play movies on the TV from the laptop.
What is the status of backing up commercial DVD's in the USA? I know that the ruling against 321 Studios made software that circumvents CSS protection illegal, but what does this means for the private consumer? Is software that bypasses CSS protection illegal to sell/make, but legal to use once obtained? Does the Fair Use doctrine provides safe harbor for consumers who want to back up their DVD's for personal use? What about not ripping the DVD's, but copying their content *as is* to the drive, and playing them from the folder they are placed into? Is that legal? And are there currently any legal programs that will allow me to create the home entertainment server that I'm interested in creating?

need to read ISO movie files? I have DVD fab platinum ed. I got it to rip movies to my HD, and eventually set up a home entertainment network and a home media server. but our DVD playing program doesn't read ISO's. I can watch the movies only by opening dvd fab and then using the preview window, which you right click and make full screen. but it doesn't have anything but basic functionality. any thing out there that plays ISO movie files? or any other suggestions?
How can I add one more hard disk drive to my PC? I have a PC which I use as a server for playing backup copies of my DVD's on my home entertainment system. It has an 80Gb and a 350Gb hard disk already. I want to buy a 750Gb drive and simply add it in if possible. Anybody done this or would I be better to swap out one of the smaller drives. I'd rather keep the existing setup and connect the new drive up as well but it occurred to me that I have run out of ribbon cable connectors as I also have two DVD drives. Is it possible or advisable to buy an extension cable for a new drive for both data and power? Thanks.
I have a wireless home network and I would like to use my TV as a monitor.? I would like to be able to use my TV as a computer monitor using my home PC as the "server ?" I could buy a computer for the room that the TV is in and get a wireless hookup to the home computer but can I do it cheaper. I would like to be able to play the music from my home PC through my entertainment system and also surf the internet from the couch. I would gt a wireless keyboard and mouse, do I have to buy a whole new computer to do this? How can I achieve this computer setup? I want to build a second computer for watching media on my TV and storing music. Ideally, this will be a small computer that can sit on my entertainment center. I also want to be able to control the computer remotely. (ie - browse and launch files from my desktop). I have an Xbox 360. Is the best route to stream data from Windows Home Server? Will that clog my network? Would a virtual machine-type setup be a better idea?
I purchased an I.P. address with my website, can i host a game with it? I have recently bought a website named dexincorporated.com and i have literally just started. It's a game making company for entertainment purposes. It came with an I.P. address and my server at home is constantly hidden so its annoying to host from here so would it be possible to run a clean server using that I.P. address? i have total control over it.
Gaming sites not blocked by 8e6 R3000? My school has given everybody laptops, but every site you visit is routed through their servers, so even on my home internet most sights with any entertainment value are blocked.
AMD Phenom II X4 Quad core 810 vs Intel Core i5-650? worth the difference in price? Somewhat confusing, but I'm comparing these two Gateway systems. I'm looking to spend under $800. I need the system to serve two Virtual Servers and still allow me to use the servers for development, surfing and media processing. I'm noting the Intel one has DDR3 vs DDR2. But is the Intel really only Dual Core vs Quad Core on the cheaper system? There is a $150 price difference between the two. Which is better: XBOX 360 or PC? *PLEASE READ THE DESCRIPTION FIRST, OR MOST OF IT...*? I know! I know! I know that PC's have much better graphics! I don't need a whole article on how Fallout 3 looks gorgeous on a PC compared to an XBOX 360... Here's the point: I have both systems, a high end PC and XBOX 360, and enjoy playing on both. However, I have noticed that the number of players is rising on XBOXs these days, and I was wondering why that is... I created this question to not only say what I love about both, but to hear why everyone else chooses which they prefer... Here are MY views on things: I love both PC and console gaming, but I would hate to double up on all my games, for instance, I have already bought 2 versions of all of the Call of Duty games, one on XBOX and one on PC. As you may know, this is not only expensive but redundant. I understand that these are hard times for everyone, and that is why there are more console gamers appearing than there have been in a while: in order to play a cool PC game with good graphics, you need a pretty nice PC, which can cost anywhere from $400 - $4000, not including monitor, headset, speakers, etc. while it can cost only fractions of that by buying an XBOX 360, only $200 - $300 for the actual console, not including the television setup, speakers, etc. and have not as good graphics, but a fun and memorable experience nonetheless. I am fortunate enough to have both, but I threw it out there for reference. Most of my friends rave about their XBOXs and the games they have, and I want to play those games with them, but I would much prefer using a mouse and keyboard over a controller for most of the games XBOX offers. I do not hate the controller, I am just a bigger fan of the mouse and keyboard, as it delivers crisp and precise movements and control over the XBOX controller. I LOVE XBOX LIVE, everything about it is awesome, the free ("free" with a $50 Gold XBOX LIVE subscription) IGN Insider Moves, OXM, Major's Minute, the whole lot, but I love Steam as well. Not only does Steam offer many killer deals on games and have mega sales on almost everything, STEAM IS FREE! I love when I come home from buying an XBOX game, slip the game into the console and play it, without any installation or waiting, which can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 hours. I could care less where I played, whether on a couch or a comfy chair, but I enjoy playing on the same console with my friends, which is impossible on a PC. I am a big fan of the PC's highly advertised "Free DLC" through updates and patches, vs paying $10 - $15 for XBOX DLC. However, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 for the PC has tested my patience and appreciation for Steam games, as I have run into many hackers and cheaters that ruin the game for everyone. Dedicated servers are awesome, as you can find any match you wanted: gametype, map, mods, player numbers, hardcore/normal health, etc. and join that game in an instant. But playing in a lobby adds a dimension of unknown and uncertainty (Who am I playing with? What is the next map?) which is also different and enjoyable. In my honest opinion, both the PC and XBOX 360 are pretty evenly matched in terms of fun, playability and entertainment, but as of right now, and the foreseeable future, I think that most of my time will be spent on my PC, as it is (in my opinion), and has been, the best way to play video games. There, I have written my essay, the point I'm trying to make is: Which do YOU think is better: the PC, or the XBOX 360, and WHY? I'm sorry that I wrote so much, and many of you won't bother to read what I wrote. All I am trying to ask is which system do you perfer to play games and why? I just wrote that "essay" to spread my thoughts on the matter. It's just a topic I find interesting and I wanted to see what other people thought about it... that's all...
Can you help me please? :)? I know some of you are against this, but I need a website address that can bypass all of my schools servers. HELP! I'm going through a lot of stuff in my life right now and need suggestions as to what to do? I was born in Dallas, Texas and raised in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. After I graduated highschool I moved back down to Dallas, Texas and pretty much started over. The only person I knew there was my older sister but the rest of my siblings and family were still in Cedar Rapids. I have currently lived in Dallas for 3 1/2 years now and I do like it. I like the atmosphere, the people, the fact that its a big city, the resturants/shops, my apartment is amazing....there are so many things I enjoy about it. However, I have never really made many friends in Dallas. I dont really talk to my older sister that much and all I pretty much do is work and sit at home. I do have my best friend there (who is a guy) but I've recently realized that I'm in love with him and he doesnt feel the same way about me. He says we can remain best friends but honestly, I dont think I could stand to see him with another girl ever, it would break my heart. Plus, he lives right across the hall from me! I'm used to being with him every single day, hes even my manager at work so if I'm not with him outside of work then were together at work. So pretty much the only person I have in Dallas is him. I'm thinking about moving back to Iowa, but am not sure yet. I'm not a big fan of Iowa but on the other hand, my family is in iowa and I do have good friends there. The apartments definitely arent as nice, so my living situation will be hard to get used to. And there isnt much I could do for entertainment. I could easily get a job in iowa (I'm a bartender/server) and I've already lined up interviews with people there. I know so many people who can get me a job. I'm just confused as to what to do. Do I stay in the place where I dont really know anybody because I love the atmosphere and my apartment or do I move back to the place I was trying to escape because my family and friends are there? All suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you for reading all of that :) I know it was a lot!
Is this a good time to move to Nevada for Higher Education? So... I just had an urge for a new change in my life. I attend a local college in Denver CO. I work as a cocktail server and promotional model part time. I am in school majoring in communications. I want to be an entertainment journalist. Tuition at University of Nevada - Las Vegas UNLV is HALF of what my tuition would be here in Colorado. Not only that, I would like to take advantage of the $15k tax credit for new home buyers. Although it sounds like a great plan, I am afraid because of the economy's downtime right now. I would like to hear responses from residents and/or students of UNLV. What do you think? Am I a little too optimistic or should I keep reaching for the stars? I will be visiting sometime in the next few weeks to kind of get my feet wet in the city and campus to get a more realistic feeling about all this. For those of you who think I am not out of my mind, any advice of where I should or shouldn't live?
Is there a better way here? YouTube and Hughes Net!? I live in rule Michigan, where internet options like DSL, Cable or even 3G are not an option. So we are stuck paying a relativity high price for satellite internet, and to make matters worse a family of 4 has to share 250mb a day. I am a computer nerd, going to college for programming, and Hughes net makes it almost impossible to learn from home. One of my preferred ways of learning is with videos. Youtube Is a very good place for learning how to program, network or even for simple entertainment (no way!), but I always have to watch videos at 240p, and after 15 videos of a 45 part series there goes most of your data. I am wondering if there is an ISP like Hughes net but without the download cap, or some web site or program that compresses youtube videos even more (server side) or something that would make this more usable. I know there is a time overnight where you can download all you want, so I wonder if there is a downloader program that can be scheduled also? Thinks in advanced
Should I tell my guy friend that I have a crush on a co-worker of his? Well, so, here's my story... I used to be in love. The kind of love that would make you die for a person, or overdraw your bank account just to get him a hot apple cider from Starbucks because he'd been stuck in the freezer at work all day. (we work at a health-food store.) The kind of love that made you lose sleep and weight for all the amount you think about them. Thankfully, yet painfully, I fell out of love with him, and we're now pretty good friends. We both had this dream of leaving everything we have here at home and going to see the world- Ireland, mainly. We joked about it at first, then we actually became quite serious about it. I learned violin to make change on the streets, and he got another job to get there by this summer. This job of his is as a server at a local pub. It's probably the coolest place in our little po-dunk town, where nothing happens and you see the same faces everywhere. The best part is the music. Some of the greatest small-name bands and dj's play there, and I had always wanted to who was in charge of booking entertainment.. Then I found out who it was- a guy named Ryan. The first time I saw Ryan, I almost fell in love. He's not very attractive in the typical-attractive kind of way. But he's attractive in my way: 30-ish (I'm 23...I've always liked older guys, but is this too much of a difference?), very short, big brown eyes, dark hair, scruffy jaw/moustache, circular glasses. I've heard him described as creepy, but I find him adorable to the millionth degree.. I am not quite in love with him, because I don't know him, but everything I do know about him I love: his very elegant usage of "f*ck you", the way he threads his way through the crowd to get to the soundboard, a glass of red wine in hand, the way he stands by himself and just listens to the music, the way he talks to everyone like he's known them for years. He's very friendly and congenial with almost everyone. Except for me. He completely ignores me, and even though he knows me and my friend are, indeed, friends, and even though I'm slowly starting to get to know everyone else there, he avoids my eye contact, and won't come near me. It's killing me, and I feel like a loser for even trying to make eye contact. I don't know if this is because he's attracted to me (hey, guys are weird, okay?), or if it's because he's absolutely repulsed by me. I don't know what else to do to put some kind of 'signal' out that I'm interested in him. I'm usually a very secretive person, and this would be really hard for me to do, but should I tell my friend about my crush? I've never talked to him about my feelings for any other guy; not even him, when I liked him. I'm tired of being a coward when it comes to love, but doing this could either destroy me or make me...should I do anything at all? Thank you to everyone for their earnest answers- I appreciate it so much!
