HP Laptop Power Compatability (US-INDIA)? I bought a HP laptop from the US. Shortly I moved to INDIA and using the same power adapter connecting it to the plug without any converter. Apparently I find that the adapter gets heated quickly. The power supply in india is 230V comparing 110V of US. Do I need to use a convertor for using the ac adapter here in the India? Chennai-India -My friend bought the latest HP Pavillion dv 2414, after about 8 months, suddenly one fine morning the LCD Display had a crack. We took it to the HP centre and explained the case to them. The service engineer simply said it is not covered under warranty and refused to give any explanation.Frustrated with the brash attitude, he almost decided to go in for a new one. Incidentally when he was browsing for similar incidents, there were many posts on the poor quality of service of HP and how their laptops are shipped with manufacturing defects and the deplorable quality of service at HP. Which is better between HP or Toshiba laptops? I'm about to FREAK!!! I bought a HP Pavilion dv9310us in June, and it crashed twice. I sent it in for repair once, and it's still not working. They gave me a whole new hard drive, but it won't work... it wouldn't turn on , and it couldn't be repaired, so I sent it back to the shop. So... now I have a Toshiba Satellite P205-S6337 and it's ok... I don't like the thickness of it, and it's not as "pretty" as the HP. I notice it's easier to navigate on the HP, and sometimes I get weird happenings on the Toshiba. But, HP customer service was good, for the fact that I could go online and get online chat tech support. When I called, it was India... but that's the Phone and online service. The service repair is in the States. When you return HPs, it's free if under warranty. Toshiba doesn't have online chat support, and the customer service is in Japan. They don't do FREE shipping.. it's $29 both ways. Should I keep the Toshiba or keep looking?

Is there a high import duty for laptops ? Most companies charge 2.5 times the US price in India? Most Laptop companies(Dell, Lenovo, HP, etc) charge exorbitant prices in India. A model that costs around $1K in US has a price tag of more than Rs. 85K in India. That's more than double. What are the import duty and other charges levied for importing laptops by our bloodsucking govt ? A Dell Latitude D830 sells for $859 (i.e. Rs. 36,937 at $1 = Rs. 43) in US. The base price of the same model in India is Rs.75,990.00. Additional costs for improvements, etc. Why this huge discrepancy ? Considering the earning ratio for same job in US and India, this looks even more ridiculous. The same model costs RM 4350/- in Malayasia. At the conversion rate of 1RM = Rs. 13.28, that is Rs. 57,768/-. So why do Indians have to pay through their nose ?

I own a HP dv5200tx Laptop. Its dvd writer needs to be changed. I need to know some sellers for the same.? HP/Compaqs or Dell laptops? I'm getting a new laptop sometime before the end of November. I want an HP. They're cute and really inexpensive at Best Buy. I have a Dell desktop and it's pisses me off to no end and I also had a Dell laptop about 5 years ago in 8th grade. I must admit though, their tech support where someone else (in India, mind you) can take over your computer instead of struggling to understand through their thick accents. My friend has told me that Dell computers are much better and my small RAM (512 MB) is why my computer is crappy because they pretty much tricked my flashing their nice $399 signs to me before I learned about computers and my computer illiterate mother. Now I'm looking at HPs that have huge RAMs--like 4MB and a really nice hard drive size--260 GB. That's music to my Dell weary ears. And with all that for only $500! But, she really has me reconsidering because I've used hers and it works really well even if it is ugly. I'm starting college in the fall so I only need a computer that I can run three or four programs on at once (iTunes, web browser, word processor etc.) and that is speedy. I don't need all that extra crap like a huge screen or stuff for graphics. And, I need really good warranty. Dell charges out the ass for warranty--like having to pay $200 or more for it alone. I'm not rich here! But, like I said, I like their tech support and I've heard that HP's sucks. HP/Compaq or Dell? I need a good amount of RAM and a large hard drive! And please don't mention a Mac. They're overpriced and I hate the OS. And don't even start with how they don't get viruses. As popular as they are getting, I give it two years before Macs are blowin' up-literally-everywhere

My thoughts: 1) Bigger screen= more power consumption. 2) HP has more outlets & service centres, than sony, in India 3) Sony does not offer Nvidia 8600M graphics, and i WILL play demanding games sometimes, though not always. 4) HP offers 8600 M GT on 17" laptops, which are diificult to carry around. Sony has a bit small 14.1" screen, will it be good for movies and internet? 5) which is more RUGGED, Sony or HP? 6) Which has better service and running lifetime costs, breakdown cycles, etc.?
