Similar printers HP 1209 & 1315. 1 rejected cartridge & 1 accepted.. thoughts on why? A fellow gladly traded his HP 1209 for my Epson 440 printer because he kept getting error messages. Thinking I had gotten the much better of the deal w/a more multifunction printer, and knowing of a similar but updated printer on sale at Goodwill, I bought the HP 1315 to offer him instead. I checked the 1209 and on the 1st run it worked fine, then I got the cartridge error he mentioned. I checked which cartridge was causing the error by removing one at a time & watching the message.. I tried the "bad" cartridge in the other printer & it seems to accept it (though it's giving a paper error). I ordered another cartridge, and upon 2 trials w/the 1209 it's still being accepted (printer fixed! yeehaa). Thoughts on why one printer accepts the cartridge while the other one doesn't?
what are the materials needed to refill ink in HP printers? I am looking for things needed to be able to refill my cartridge in my printer. Of course i already know what type of ink I will use. I was just wondering what chemical to put in the lid where ink comes out so the dried inks can be wiped out. When I was in INKTEC, I saw the sales lady put on some kind of white liquid in the lid of my cartridge and presto the black inks that are dried are now dissolved. I really need to know what chemical is that.. is it water? alcohol?
What are the #pages/cartridge of the Samsung ML2240 and HP P1505? I've got money to burn and I want to get a laser printer to stop from bleeding so much money on inkjet ink. There are two stores with two different printers on sale right now. I'm going to use it for printing out my manuscript (25-26 lines of 12p New Courier type per page) and I want to know how many pages each printer prints out per toner cartridge. Samsung ML2240 HP P1505 Then I can figure out price of cartridge in $ per page.
Do new printers have epmty ink cartridges? I just bought a new HP printer, but the ink cartrige only lasted for about 50 pages. The sales guy says all new printers have cartridges only 20% full. Is this true? Why isn't everybody outraged by such a scam if true? It also is not environmentally friendly, since most people don't bother recycling them. I would think it only would cost them a few pennies to provide a full cartridge.
How long do unopened HP inkjet cartridges last before drying out from no use? Right now there's a sale where I can get HP ink cartridges for my printer for 25% off, but because part of the savings is a volume discount, I have to buy at least 6 combo packs (1 black + 1 tricolor each). Should I be worried about some of the cartridges' drying out before I ever get the chance to use them? How long will an HP cartridge last if I don't open its packaging and just keep it in my desk?
can anyone help w/ fixing my grammar? im a international student...? Please help... im a international student. Hewlett-Packard Company is known as world’s largest maker of personal computers and also one of the world's largest information technology companies operates in nearly every country. William R. Hewlett and David Packard found this company in 1939. HP’s Major product lines include personal computing devices, enterprise servers, related storage devices, as well as a diverse range of printers and other imaging products. They are targeting in variety of fields; households, small to medium sized businesses and as well as online distribution, consumer-electronics and office-supply retailers, software partners and major technology vendors. As a world’s largest information technology company, there are still few problems that company is facing. Few of the problems that HP is facing are drop in sales, decline in imaging and printing group avenue, and decline in software revenue. One of the major problem that HP is facing is that drop in sales. HP saw its sales dropped 19 percent to $8.19 billion: PCs, Printers, Servers, and Software. There are some possible reasons why the sale has declined due to possible economic crisis, quality of products, trend of new technologies, and other competitors in the market. By looking at an evidence of constant drops of HP’s sales, there are some possibilities that HP’s sales wouldn’t improve in anytime soon. At this point, serious action must be taken to solve this problem. There are many ways to solve the issues starting from switching the locations/territories, and plan a better advertisement/marketing strategy. But my recommendation to this solution is to improve products and sales by managing the relationship between development and sales team, and catch up with the new trend of the technologies and hit the market with the new product that has same benefit, much more convenient, and more affective compared to PC products. To support my thought of recommendation, besides looking at the formal graph of statistics, we can easily find the mobile phone that has same function as computer. According to Forrester Researcher Report, they have researched and has clearly announced with their back up evidence that PC sales will continue to decline, much as they have for the past several years. Just by planning or making a first step into this industry will have a huge impact of HP’s future.
Is the HP photosmart c4435 a good printer? My old printer HP deskjet 5550 is starting to break down. I'm looking to buy a new cheap printer that's BETTER than this one, and good for printing out college essays and the likes. I found an HP photosmart c4435 at my local Walmart that was on sale for $50. It's an All-in-one printer/scanner/copier. Should I buy it? The price seems a bit too cheap, maybe it has some major issues. What do you guys think?
Is store brand refillable inkjet just as good as the HP brand for my HP inkjet printer? I bought at Walgreens Walgreens had a special sale on refilling my HP inkjet color & Black ink cartridges. $ 5 .00 each. I've always used HP, but my nephew says it should be good enough. When I went ot the HP website, they said I really should be using HP as to not to have any printers damaging my printer. Has anyone out there ever used a non-brand name refill on inkjet cartridges? I have a 3320 HP inkjet printer, & I usually clean out the printer as instructed in the HP manual. Would appreciate your valued information thank you.

HP ink jet cartridges = extortion? The question itself could be a news paper headline. I want your opinion on Hewlett Packard's brutally expensive ink cartridges. Am I the only person who thinks that HP is extorting money from owners of their crappy home/office printers by making them pay $20+ for new cartridges?? In comparison, these cartridges contain as much plastic as the average McDonald's kid's toy, except with chemicaly engineered liquid inside. The cost of prducing one cartridge can't be more than $5-10 for HP meaning their profits on each sale is at least 200%! To me that is alarming. 1) Does anybody else think this is more or less just consumer extortion? (I paid more for ink this weekend than I did for 60L of gas) 2) Can somebody recomend a cheaper solution? (I'm stuck with this HP printer for a while now so a new one isn't an optoion) Thanks
Do you know anything about ink cartriges? Alright if anyone is computer stupid it's me. I bought a HP Printer at a yard sale and the old lady said that all it needs is ink. So the first question is, will the printer hook up to any computer? The second question is, what info do I need to get the ink for that printer from the store? Thanks a bunches
Printer Recommendation! Canon, Lexmark, HP? I need a printer for my classroom. After doing some research, I narrowed it down to 3 models: Canon Pixma mx860, Lexmark Interact s605, and HP Photosmart Premium all in one (CD055A). I have always had HP printers, and have not been impressed. I really liked the Canon, except I read that if you run of of ink the whole printer won't function (not sure if that is true!) I have not had a lot of experience with Lexmark, but the printer seems great...and it is on sale this week. Scanning and duplexing are the features I am really looking for... Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom!
this garage sale guy sold me two different printers in one day...? And neither one of them worked! I went and bought an HP with a flat bed scanner, seemed nice. 15 bucks. I said to him, "this works, right?" he said "oh yeah sure it does, just bring it back if it doesn't. I'm positive it will though." so I take it home. there's a cartridge jam and it doesn't do anything at all.... so I take it back like an hour later. he says, "what?? it doesn't work? here, I'll give you this one and 5 dollars back." so I take the new printer and 5 bucks. he even plugged it in and showed that the cartridges worked. I just tried it out again and the cartridges move, but there's no ink.... and it costs 25 dollars to get new ink for HP's! So my question is this!!: What should I do to get back at this guy.........? And just for fun, I'm gonna video tape myself pranking this jerk and post it on youtube for the person that I decide gives me the best payback scheme.

Question about an HP Printer! (With link)? Ok so I just bought the HP Office jet 5610 and I am wandering if it was a mistake. It hasn't gotten here yet but I am wandering if it is a good printer for pictures? Thats why I am getting a printer is to print out pictures. I am a picture nut and I want them to look amazing! So was this a good choice? It was on sale for 69 on newegg and my bf convinced me to get it..now I am feeling fickle. What do you think? Have you used this one for pictures? Thanks so much!!! http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16828104393&nm_mc=EMC-IGNEFL061708&cm_mmc=EMC-IGNEFL061708-_-Printers-_-L0D-_-28104393
How do I speed up my printer spooling speed? I found an HP LaserJet 1100 at a garage sale for $15. It prints great, but it spools incredibly slow. I didn't have spooling problems with either of my previous ink printers (one was an HP and one was a Lexmark). I've tried a few things such as "Send Graphics as Raster," and that helped a little, but not much. And I've downloaded the latest drivers from HP's site.
What are some good all-in-one printers? Right now I have an HP PSC 1400 series printer. Ever since I had replace the cartiages with new ones the printer will not work. I'm thinking about getting a new one. I have search and found some Epson on sale for from $40 to $80. Is Epson a good brand? Can some of you recommend me a good brand. Thanks!
I have a hp d1420 trying to install on windows 98? It was the only printer at the local Wal-Mart and the sales rep said it should work. When I got home however the disc prompted me to upgrade my operating system. I current don't have the hardware or means of doing this right now so is there a way for me to get this printer to install? I don't need all the features just the basic print feature.
Carly Fiorina drove HP into the dirt before she was ousted from her CEO postion, now you want her as a senator? Why would anyone vote for someone who cannot run a company to represent them? http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6939785/ updated 2/9/2005 3:49:04 PM ET Share Print Font: + - SAN FRANCISCO — Carly Fiorina’s nearly six-year reign at Hewlett-Packard Co. ended abruptly Wednesday as board members forced her out, disappointed by her inability to transform a plodding technology giant dominated by printer sales into a more nimble innovator. H-P’s stock, which has gone nowhere for two years and is down two-thirds from its peak in 2000, rose almost 7 percent after earlier soaring almost 11 percent on the news of her ouster. Board members said they fired the chief executive — perhaps corporate America’s most influential woman — because Fiorina failed to slash costs and boost revenue as quickly as directors had hoped. SHE IS A FAILURE HP STOCKS WENT UP AFTER THEY FIRED HER LOLOLOOLOLOLOL LOL DOWN? CALIFORNIA SUCKS ASS I DONT WANT ANYONE RUNNING IT Shovel Ready TOTAL LIE just two days, HP and Compaq share prices declined by 21.5% and 15.7% respectively. Together, the pair lost US$ 13 billion in market capitalization in a couple of days. In the next two weeks, HP's stock went down by another 17%, amidst a lot of negative comments about the merger from analysts and the company's competitors. Industry analysts wondered what benefits HP, a global market leader in the high margin printers business, would reap in acquiring a personal computer (PC) manufacturer like Compaq at a time when PCs were fast emerging as low-margin the merger also failed to put HP in competition with DELL and IBM like it was proposed Patches O'Houlihan how can you ask a question and then "cat got your tounge?" in the same breath? you're a perfect example of a total moron. Executive experience doesnt mean SHIT if you cant lead. anyone who is dedicated can make up to ceo. once in the chair and you show you cannot think criticaly and make good decisions then you get fired like her I'm GLAD YOU ALL WANT TO REPLACE ONE MORON WITH ANOTHER. you guys do California great justice!
HP psc1310 not compatible with windows Vista!? Hi there, I'd like some help on my printer. See, it's really old (it's a printer, scanner and copier) but it's like 3 years old and so I have a new computer that was a birthday gift but the problem is that it's Windows Vista and I don't know if it's compatible with my old printer. I asked a sales associate when I was looking at new printers if the new one I was interested in was compatible with Windows Vista and he suggested that I just update the driver for my old one so that my printer will work with my new computer. I guess I could save some money and that way I don't have to sell my old one and replace it with a new one. Thing is, I don't know how to do it and before i resort to calling HP customer service, I was wondering if you guys had any ideas on how to help me with this problem. Thanks.

Laptops - Compaq vs. Dell/HP? What do you think about Compaq laptops? I really need a laptop asap and I see a Compaq for $349. Problem is I don't want to buy a lemon. Should I just wait until Christmas time to purchase a Dell or HP when they might be on sale? That way I can continue to save my money. What would you do? I was also thinking of buying the Compaq now and saving for a Dell or HP and then I can have two and sell/give the Compaq to my little sister. I currently have a Dell desktop with the Dell printer, scanner, copier.
I'm looking for a Multifunction Printer up to $230, which brand is best and economical to run? HP or Canon? I already bought an Epson Stylus Office TX610 but got thinking that I won't be using most of the function so I'm really wasting my money cos I only really needed something that can print a really good brochures and cards in colours plus scan. When I found out in the Forums @ Whirpool review re Epson Brand they are costly to run due to the Print Head built into the printer which needed constant aligning of print heads (which usded about 15-29% of EACH cartridge to do once and it often needed 2 or 3 loops to get it right). It recommended Canon as the best all-round package, excellent cost-effective printing with removable print-head and individual ink taks on many of their model. However the sales man at Domayne sudgested HP as most economical to run out of all the printer in the market. He has own them before and was happy with them. What do you think? Lucky I can return the Epson. I would really appreciate if someone gets back to me asap. Thank you! Chloe
What's the best Brand Multifunction Printer and Economical to run for up to $230 HP or Canon? I only need it for printing good quality brochures and cards on colours and occasionally uses the scanner. I haven't used the fax in the past so I assume I won't be needing it now. The forums at Whirpool doesn't recommend Epson as the print head built into the printer so if it gets clogged, it can't be removed and will require sending back to Epson to fix. And the cleanning system involves pushing ink thro' the head to flush out impurities - which it does but at the cost of a fair amount of ink. And needed constant aligning of print heads (which uses about 15-20% of EACH cartridge to do once and it often needed 2 or 3 loops to get it right). It recommended Canon as it offers the best all-round package: Excellent cost-effective printing with removable print-head and individual ink tanks on many of their models. However the sales man at Domayne suggested HP is the best brand and ecomomical to run in the market. What do you think? I'll appreciate it if someone reply to this asap as I got to make up my mind by tomorrow cos I've to return Epson Stylus Office TX610FW. Thank you so much! Chloe
Software for vista printer? Last year i got a new dell computer. Now printer came with. Can i put the software that came with the computer be install on a hp printer? I got the computer at a yard sale and the computer works i made sure of it before i brough it.
Sale price for old computer? Okay-- i'll try this again. If you were to garage sale a Dell Dimension 4600 Desktop computer from 2004 (maybe someone would want the parts, monitor, keyboard, idk?), then how much would you ask? It has a DVD and CD drive-- but it is in need of some repairs to get it in good working condition. It is your regular run of the mill desktop, purchase price was $1000, but I know the prices are much lower now. I also have a really great printer/copier/scanner-- HP psc 2110 all in one to sell. It works fine. If you have any suggestions, thanks!
Anyone own an HP laptop, if so how is it? I've been shopping around for a laptop after my Dell desk top's motherboard went out after 3 years. My brother recommended an HP, he's had his for about 2-3 years and it's taken a pretty good beating for a laptop. I've looked on Costco's website and saw an HP pavilion laptop in a back-to-school sale ad for Office max, it has the same features as the laptop I looked on on Costco's site except the screen on it is 2 inches higher and doesn't come with the printer Costco tossed in if I buy it from them. I had heard form my Dad that Dell used to be one of the top computers around but now they've lost their touch, I decided to skip toshiba since a lot of their products aren't that great even though I do have a DVD player from said company that is almost 5 years old and it's still working to this day. But still does anyone have an HP laptop, if so how is it?
Someone wants to manage a FreeNetCafe in the center of Bangkok, Thailand? This Internet Café brings in average revenue of 70,000 baht per month. Half of the income is from internet usage and the other half is from added value services provided for businesses and tourists by direct sales. Included: eight fully operational computers, all fitted with LCD monitors and ready to use for VoIP, a Samsung laser jet printer, an HP office jet printer, an ADSL modem, 1Mbps high speed internet access, a 16 port wireless access router, a home theatre system with computer connection, two air-conditioners and a fully fitted kitchenette, the shop is operating in lower Sukhumvit, Bangkok, for around a year. The owner has decided to relocate to one of the Kingdom’s idyllic islands, however, and must therefore part with the shop. Monthly rent is 25,000 baht on a lease that runs until July 2007. The assets have been valued at 760,000 baht, and total projected receipts of 1,320,000 baht for the first year of trade are forecast to produce revenues of 840,000 baht.
can somebody help me please with my new HP D5360 Photosmart Printer? the thing is when I bought it yesterday, it came with colour ink in the box, but the sales assistant sai I needed a Black cartridge as well for it to work, but he never had the actual cartridge on its own, so I had to buy a big box which contained 1 Black Cartridge 1 Colour Cartridge and a pack of glossy photo paper, but the thing is the codes are different on the cartridge compared to the one that was with it. it came with number 350 (colour) but the big box I got contains 253 (Tricolour) and 265 Black. could somebody tell me whos got this printer if these cartrides are ok with it please cheers :)

Should I buy an Epson InkJet Printer? I am just going to answer this, because I am quite frustrated at Epson at this moment in time. If you, by chance, happen to run out of a Cyan ink cartridge, but have the Yellow, Black and Magenta half-full, you will have to replace the Cyan cartridge before the Epson Printers let you print ANYTHING. In my case, a Research Paper, which would only use Black Ink. I tried printing it, I tried the "black ink only" setting; nothing worked. I called Epson Support. They told me that the way the infrastructure inside ALL the Epson printers is designed, it will basically force you to replace an empty cartridge even if you want to print something with the ink you have available/left over. It's more of a little trick for you to keep buying Ink from Epson, because typically, that's how most of their revenue is made. HP Printers, Lexmark, and Brother Printers do not have that kind of internal layout, and therefor, I recommend buying anything BUT an Epson printer. It's worth mentioning I'm a Tech Sales Associate at a local Office Department Store, and sell these pieces of shit to afford tuition. Thank you for hearing me out.
Replace a 4-in-1 printer before we need to? We bought an HP home computer system last month; the sales package included a new HP J5780 4-in-1 printer/fax/scanner/copier ($159 retail). Our old 4-in-1 PSC2210xi is still working fine and I slightly regret wasting money if we are replacing it unnecessarily. We have about $80 in 2 color and 2 black ink cartridges for the old one (still wrapped but the boxes are gone, so I doubt they can be returned) and of course they are a different size from the new one. According to HP customer service, the warranty period started as soon as we bought it and cannot be delayed by not opening the box. Options I have thought of: 1. keep the old one until it dies or the ink runs out, then open the new one, possibly after its warranty is up. 2. try to sell the old one with its cartridges at a small percent of its original cost and open the new one 3. give away the old one, try to sell the cartridges Vidyanand, do u mean they'll replace the cartridges even tho I bought them for a different printer?
Has anyone here tried to fill their empty printer cartridges at those ink-refill stations in Manila? I'm planning on bringing 4 empty Canon printer cartridges to be refilled in Manila on my visit. I was checking out the website of "Ink-for-Less" and it seems like a good deal. How is the quality of the ink? Does it get sticky and prints poorly after the refill? How much is it? How about colored ink? Do they fill those too? Trivia: Original printer-ink (HP, Canon, Lexmark) is more expensive per ml. than any other liquid for sale, even the most expensive champagne, perfume or concentrated rocket fuel.

Anyone any ideas on a laser printer? I do a lot of printing for my local football club, posters, tickets, fliers, letters, forms etc etc etc. All in all it probably amounts to about 800 pages per month on average, (during the season its higher than off season). I've decided to get a laser printer as my current inkjet (a new HP FS540) is not efficient enough at all....using WAYYY too much ink with replacement cartridges costing a bomb. So I've looked around and I've found a few laser printers for around £150, the HP LaserJet CP1515, the Samsung CLP-315 and the Canon Laser Shot LBP-5000 are just a few of the ones that have caught my eye. As for DPI they are all pretty respectable for what I want/need and things such as noise and speed aren't a real concern. The biggest issue which I need help with is the maintenance of the machines. I don't really understand the whole replacement drum / toner stuff. Is the drum and toner all one unit?? Do you need to be a computer engineer to maintain a laser printer? To sum up...I've done a bita research and think I've got the jist of the whole laser printing scene but a little help in 'layman' terms would be great...even a suggested machine would be great...budget limited as the football club will be paying for it and we ain't exactly rolling in it....especially in the after sale costs as that's the reason for not using the inkjet. Thanks in advance guys!!
Laser and Ink Jet Printer question Please.? What exactly is the difference between an ink jet printer and a laser printer? I have a brother MFC and it seems to have its problems. My roommate said that I should get a laser printer. What is the best in your opinions versus the other? Also, what about a HP Deskjet F2110 All in one printer, Scanner, and copier? They have them on sale at Walmart for $34. What do you think of that one. I would like one that will print off photos quickly. I am not a computer or printer wizard. Thank you all in advance, for your kind answers and advice.
Desk top Printer scanners - what is the lowest ink rates Hi- I self publish a 40 page color workbook. Printing on HP 93 and 94 cartridges are costing me about 75 cents a page. I was already recommended here printers with larger cartridges that would be cheaper, or more multi cartridges, Some printers even under 100$. It is hard for me to compare the printers. My question is does anyone have an estimated cost per color page for a specific printer. For me it is not so much the quality , or the speed, rather more the cost per page as I am not putting out that much of large quantities. But at a current 75 cents a page I am losing money on the sale of the book. Thanks
How much should I sell this computer for? I'm selling a computer at a garage sale. Ok this computer is an HP 7940. It has 512 gigs of memory. It comes with a mouse, a keyboard, a printer, speakers, etc. All it needs is a new operating system and I think a new bios. I know something is wrong with this computer, and it keeps saying it's the bios. I've tried messing with it, but I'm not very good with computers. I'm gonna let the person who buys it that it needs a little work, but it is a nice computer. I've had windows xp on it before. And it has always been a good computer. So how much do you you think I should sell it for? $30? $20? 10? $5? $1? THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!

Can't load ANY drivers?!? USB 2.0 ports, nor printer...? I keep getting a window box that pulls up titled "Select Device," and then in the box the words "The specified location does not contain information about your hardware." I've tried accessing drivers BOTH on the manufacturer's CD-ROM, and then copying the files to my C:\ and accessing them, there... HELP! My PC is 5 years old, and at this point, I'll probably run out to Circuit CIty and buy the HP AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ package they have on sale this week for $520 (after rebates). I'll probably leave by 7:30PM EST to buy a PC, so if you have any thoughts, I'd REALLY appreciate it. Thanks! P.S. This whole thing started because I couldn't have my PC communicate with my LXK X3350 3-in-1 printer. The printer works, and I tried another cord last night - to no avail. So, I thought it might be the USB port. So, I got a PCI port with "new" USB 2.0 pors, but the motherboard won't recognize it / the driver...

Can one proof read this essay? Everyday tons of hazardous electronic waste is dumped in China and other developing countries. These wastes come from various items that we use in our everyday life; some include batteries, kitchen appliances, used computer equipment, and other worn out electronic devices. These items contain chemicals, heavy metals, dangerous pathogens, and other toxins. Many places like the U.S. or the UK have not officially banned exportation of these electronic items, and countries like China still do not enforce their rules of banning e-waste importation. China allows a city like Guiyu to collect, dissemble, and produce toxic e-waste because they are a developing country who needs the money that they receive by taking in this e-waste. Since recent booms in sales of electronic items more of this e-waste is being made, which makes it hard to enforce exportation of it; because of the rate that e-waste is filling into landfills also makes it harder to discard of it. (“Toxic Waste”) In the city of Guiyu an environmental problem has spiraled out of control, citizens are being allowed to dismantle electronic waste (most imported) in their homes and near by workshops. In China recycling e-waste is not taken as a threat to the environment or health and safety regulations. Even though the Chinese law prohibits the importation of e-waste and Beijing is part of the Basle Agreement, (an international treaty that is banning the shipment of e-waste from developed countries to developing countries), they still import e-waste. Only in Guiyu are officials allowing this importation of e-waste, because it provides the cities residents with income; and so far China has not put a stop to it, because they are so hungry for all sorts of metals and the money that they earn for taking the metals and electronic items. (“In The ‘Toxic City of Guiyu, Children Play Among The Waste”) Developed countries like the U.S. (which did not sign the Basle Agreement) could keep their e-waste and properly dispose of it, but the cost of doing so does not outweigh environmental and health problems that are appearing in developing countries like China. (“In The ‘Toxic City of Guiyu, Children Play Among The Waste”) Even though the U.S. has tried to put a stop to the exportation of e-waste, corporate businesses argue to congress that environment and health problems are not a big deal, and the government is being too strict. Plus the government would be taking away from earnings that they receive every year. Communities and environmentalists are still complaining about law enforcement of regulations of hazardous e-waste. (“Toxic Waste”) The impact that e-waste is having on the wellbeing of the people in Guiyu is disastrous, and much of this could be stopped with a few e-waste regulations. “Computer carcasses line the streets, awaiting dismemberment. Circuit boards and hard drives lie in huge mounds. At thousands of workshops, laborers shred and grind plastic casings into particles, snip cables and pry chips from circuit boards. Workers pass the boards through red-hot kilns or acid baths to dissolve lead, silver and other metals from the digital detritus.” (“Chinese City Is World’s Digital Scrap Heap”) In Guiyu, workers are dismembering various electronic items. Most of them are equipped with only small hand tools; which they use to take apart old computers, monitors, printers, DVD players, telephones, MP3 players, and other electronic objects. Several of these items come from brand named companies (like HP, LG, Apple, and Compaq) who say they recycle their products. Workers that are unaware of these toxins tear apart each piece of electronic items to its smallest components, and melt the items in open fires to extract metals. Others take the remaining pieces of scrap metals and dump them in water ways. (“Toxic Tea Party”) All of this e-waste has an effect on the environment in Guiyu. “Water sources are black and pungent and choked with industrial waste, says Kevin Brigden. Brigden (Greenpeace Research Laboratories) tested streams in Guiyu and found out that acid was leaking into them. The streams had soaring levels of toxic heavy metals, which were powerful enough to disintegrate a penny in a few hours.” (Toxic Tea Party”) In Guiyu the price of water is ten times more than in other surrounding places. Water is usually brought to the people of the city by truck, because the streams are so heavily polluted that it turns a dark black color in seconds. (“Toxic Tea Party”) Local bosses pay little regard to workers’ health or regulations that prohibit dumping acid baths into rivers. The e-waste has had a negative effect on the health of the people that live around it. This e-waste can harm humans and animals if they encounter these toxins. Some toxins persist in the environment and accumulate; humans or animals often absorb them. Organizations say that dangerous levels of the metals found in Guiyu have negative effects on children. (“Toxic Waste”) A group found "Over 10 poisonous metals, such as lead, mercury and cadmium, in Guiyu” said Lai Yun, a campaigner. (“Chinese City Is World’s Digital Scrap Heap”) “Professor Hun Xia (Shantou University Medical College) tested 165 children for concentrations of lead in their blood. Eighty two percent of Guiyu children had blood/ lead levels of more than 100. Anything above that figure is considered unsafe by health experts. The average reading for these children was 149” (“Toxic Tea Party”) These high levels of lead in adults and children can lead to lower IQ’s and the development of the central nervous system. It also can cause headaches, nausea, miscarriages, and skin damage. Many of these symptoms that these people are having have not been treated properly, and the peasants do not understand what damage e-waste does to them. Clearly people suffer but that does not mean that they get paid good wages, on average workers earn about 200 to 300 yuan (US$ 24-US$36) per month in Guiyu. (“Toxic Tea Party”) Some 60,000 laborers toil in Guiyu for e-waste recycling, even as the work imperils their health. “About 2.3 million PCs, 2.7 millions computer displays and 1.35 million printers were dumped in 2002.” (“In The ‘Toxic City’ Of Guiyu, Children Play Among The Waste”) Environmentalists say in Guiyu alone, one million tons of e-waste has been treated each year. Despite all the toxins that come from e-waste, its business provides Guiyu’s locals with a more profitable living. Many residents have had better opportunities since they started recycling e-waste. City officials are proud of the e-waste industry but sensitive about its reputation as a dirty business that feeds off smuggled waste and abuses labor rights. Visitors quickly find themselves detained by the local police officers, and their video or digital photographs erased. (“Toxic Tea Party”) In Guiyu most discarded computers and electronic devices from all over the world often end up there, this may be why it’s the e-waste capital of the world. Some developed countries have banned exportation of e-waste, but even if e-waste exports stopped Guiyu recycling would not stop; because China is generating more of its own e-waste. While we may consider the environmental and health problems that e-waste poses for people there, citizens in Guiyu do no think this way; because doing this work is their way of life. Conditions in Guiyu have changed little despite the efforts of the central government to crack down and enforce the long-standing e-waste import ban. The developed countries need to stop exporting e-waste to poorer developing countries; and the U.S. needs to reduce the toxicity and amount of e-waste that is being dumped there every year. (“Toxic Villages”) I do have a works cited page!
the new GTR specs for the us? US SPEC INFORMATION: The 2009 Nissan GT-R will go on sale in the United States in June of 2008 with a base price of $69,850. The premium model will sell for $71,900, and will include a Bose sound system, side airbags, and heated seats. The Bose system consists of 11 speakers mounted in rigid aluminum diecast panels. The car's pre-order program, available through select US dealers, will begin in January. 2009 Nissan GT-R: Awesome From Afar The 2009 Nissan GT-R has broken cover. Or rather, several well-known automotive media outlets have blown its cover! When the December 2007 cover of Motor Trend got leaked (or swiped) from the printer, press embargoes were tossed aside, along with it the thin veil of secrecy the GT-R was still hiding. Namely its off-the-chart performance numbers: 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds, 11.7-second quarter mile, and top speed of 193 mph. Better still, the supercar is expected to be in the amazingly affordable $70-80K range. Unveiled at Last The black covers that hid the GT-R’s nose are gone and reveal a chiseled carbon fiber nose piece, flanked on both sides by small canards molded into the bumper itself. Look closely, and you can see how the deep front splitter directs air to the radiator and around the car. The sleek shape of the new R35 is a commendably slick 0.27 Cd (co-efficient of drag). Twin NACA ducts in the hood channel air directly to the small IHI turbos located underneath. They’re not the only low-drag aero devices used on the car, either. The front fenders have functional air ducts that sweep back from the sides of the car, drawing heat away from the engine compartment. One detail not readily apparent is the rear carbon-fiber splitter that uses airflow under the chassis to develop downforce. While standard practice for LeMans prototypes, these types of details are reserved for only a few road-going machines. Nissan engineers knew the enormous performance envelope for this car would require every (aero) trick in the book! Rear styling of the R35 features the iconic twin round taillights of the GT-R series. All in all, Nissan stylists have created a modern, functional shape that pays appropriate homage to the legendary line. V-6 Power First for GT-R Looking under the hood of the new PM (Prime Midship) chassis reveals the front-mounted engine is mounted far back for better weight distribution. But there’s no blown straight six for this thoroughly modern supercar. The new twin turbocharged 3.8 liter V-6 is named the VR38 and puts out 473 hp at 6,400 rpm and 433 lb-ft of torque at 5,200 rpm in its initial state of tune. No doubt Nissan will have more on tap for the future, but all appearances suggest that this is the engine to be federalized for North American use. Expect the compact IHI turbos to have little to none of the dreaded turbo lag of years past. An extremely clean turbo installation utilizes separate plenums and tuned intake runners for each bank of the engine. Expect to hear more details on this amazing powerplant in the near future. Meanwhile, a carbon fiber prop shaft transfers power to the rear- mounted transaxle. Utilizing a six-speed, direct-drive semi-automatic gearbox, Nissan’s latest AWD creation can vary power delivery from 50/50 (front/rear) to 2/98 for heavy acceleration. By utilizing the paddle shifters, GT-R pilots may sample full-throttle, no lift upshifts, and computer-guided downshifts with full rev matching. The GT-R’s suspension is more familiar, with twin wishbones up front and a five-link rear. The dampers are electronically controlled, with three separate programs (race, sport and comfort) available at the touch of a button. More extreme are the 20” alloy wheels with massive six-piston Brembo (front) and four-piston (rear) calipers with equally enormous 15.2” rotors. You’ll need that kind of stopping power, as the latest R35 is expected to tip the scales at a touch over 3,792 pounds. Silken Hammer Inside the cockpit, it’s luxury blended with pure performance. Racing-style leather seats with large side bolsters will hold you (and your passengers) in place, although I’m not sure anyone really wants to be tossed around in the smallish 2+2 seats in back! A beautifully sculpted instrument panel features a center-mounted tach (with a 7K redline) and a smaller speedo on the left. The instruments move up and down with the steering wheel, so each driver can find the perfect position. Nissan continues their superb job in blending traditional control surfaces with cutting edge technology. A good example is the center stack with traditional HVAC controls in the center and a large video screen just above this. Toggling through this display provides such diverse information as turbo boost, g-loadings, engine performance parameters and which of the really hot girls is lusting for a ride in your new GT-R. OK, I made that last one up. Step into the new R35 and you’ll find everybody wants a ride!
PC World - very NON PC - need advice? I bought a digital camera and more recetly a PC from PC World. Both are faulty and in particular the Hewlett Packard printer (photosmart3210) will not feed paper through properly. I bought it less than 6 months ago and PC World inform me that it is no longer their responsibility and I need to go direct to the manufacturer. The Sale of Goods Act tells me different and that the retailer is 100% responsible for the goods whilst in warrantly. I am worried that PC World are not going to take me seriously and just turn me away OR offer an exact replacement. Reviews online tell me that my problem is not unique. I have written to HP and am waiting for a response. Has anybody else had issue with PC World and what did you do? They seem to have 400 staff to every store but limited help in every store!
Can someone give me tips for buying a laptop? Where are some good places to look? I've looked at the dell dell, the hp website, the circuit city website, and the best buy website. I definitely want to get one on clearance, and possibly with a free printer or something. So far it seems like circuit city has the best clearance items. Although, they call it "outlet". Does this mean they are used computers? I want a new computer. Also, dell has this "instant savings" thing. Does that mean it's realy on sale? or is it mostly meant to make you think it is? Anyway, I just want tips on buying a laptop. Any tips would be great. i'd also like to know about how much I could save on like a $1000 laptop. I saw a free printer and $200 off. Can i find better than that? Okay, I've heard people saying that their laptops aren't even lasting one year. Is this normal? if you're careful, shouldn't it last a few years?
